5 Characteristics that You Want to Find in a Good Lawyer

Divorce lawyers

There seem to always be new laws going in to affect like new DUI laws or criminal laws, etc. In order to make sure that you keep up with the changing laws, you’ll need to find a DUI attorney or whatever kind of lawyer that can help your case. A good attorney will make sure that they are kept up to date with the updates and will be able to advice you as well as represent you. Here are a few more things that you should look for in a good lawyer whether it is your defense attorney or a family law lawyer.

Attentiveness
You’ll be able to tell if a lawyer is attentive to you right from the very first interview. If they seem distracted and are answering phone calls, texts or emails while you’re talking to them, this is a red flag. You want a lawyer that can put everything aside and listen to you and be able to advise you on new DUI laws and various things that are now in place. You don’t want a lawyer that forgets what case is yours because of how distracted they are with their other cases or worse, personal life and drama.

Approachable
A good lawyer will allow you to contact them at any time. If the lawyer you are interviewing says that you can contact him through his or her assistant or paralegal or worse, that you have to wait to hear from them; this isn’t good. Lawyers that are good at their job have enough experience to know that their clients can get anxious sometimes and it’s important to be able to approach them at any time, whether it be for updates or to provide new information.

Activeness
This isn’t referring to exercise. Whether or not your attorney exercises really doesn’t have any effect on your case. At least, depending on what the case is. Being active refers to being pro-active and making sure that everything is done properly and efficiently. Getting papers in on time, following up with judges and getting to court in a timely manner are all things that you need from your attorney. If you don’t feel that your attorney is taking an active interest in your case, then it may be time to look into a new one.

Adaptability
During the course of a case or claim, things change and shift. New information comes to light, new laws are put into affect and more. You want an attorney that is able to go with the flow and keep up. Being able to adapt to a new situation it’s important to keeping their cool in court. In new evidence comes up in court, the last thing you want the opposing party to see on your lawyer’s face is a look of shock or surprise.

Ambition
An ambitious attorney will go above and beyond to make sure that they are doing everything within their power to win your case. This may require late nights at the office but this should not be a new thing for your lawyer. If you are interviewing an attorney and they mention that they do not like working over time or outside of normal business hours, this is a warning sign. All lawyers should understand that their job is not necessarily confined to banker’s hours.

If you find yourself potentially in trouble with the law, you may not know about any new DUI laws or clauses that could put you in more trouble than you already are. Having an attorney by your side that knows what he’s doing and how to take care of certain situations is so helpful to you. Whether you are going to stand trial or even if you just need advice, it’s good to have a lawyer on retainer. Most businesses and companies usually do have a specific law firm that they use to protect against new DUI laws and various lawsuits made against the company. Hopefully you will never see your self on the wrong side of the law, but if you do, these are the five things that you want to see in your lawyer before you decide who to hire.
